This is a cost effective, design-rich strategy that celebrates the status of timber walls. The result is a rich and dynamic spatial experience for both drivers and pedestrians and residents. The walls consist of ply panels which in plan form zigzags in a variety of scales appropriate to the location; smaller scale adjacent to residential allotments and larger scale adjacent to open land.
The zigzags compress and expand the space of the freeway and adjacent walkways/biketracks. They introduce a rhythmic element that heightens the experience of movement and also create niches, which will be further defined by soft landscape and seating elements. The panels form horizontal bands differentiated by colour.
